Hall of Famer defends Damian Lillard's push for move to Heat

Damian Lillard is only the latest NBA player to request a trade to a contender in pursuit of a Larry O'Brien Trophy. Like others before him, Lillard's push for a trade away from the Portland Trail Blazers has been met with criticism, something Hall of Famer Gary Payton vehemently disagrees with.

Speaking with Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Payton said, "Everybody should chase a championship."

"Why are we playing basketball? That is the whole object of playing basketball," Payton said. "If you want to go somewhere else if you've got a chance to win a championship, go there."

Payton's words come from experience. While Payton didn't force a trade, he made the decision to sign with the Heat in 2005, winning his first NBA title in the second-to-last season of his 17-year career.

The former Seattle Supersonics great added that Lillard wants to play for Pat Riley, calling it a "good move" for the seven-time All-Star. Also, Payton hyped up the possible pairing of Lillard and Miami's unquestioned face and leader, Jimmy Butler, as a game-changing move.

Despite all the talk, a Lillard trade to the Heat or any other team doesn't seem imminent. The snag in a potential deal to Miami is reportedly the Trail Blazers' asking price. The best-rumored package on the table for Lillard is believed to be three first-round picks and guard Tyler Herro, but Portland seems to be holding out for more.

Lillard appears to have his mind made up in wanting to head to South Beach. While it would behoove the Trail Blazers to ultimately make a deal, they do have to look out for the team's best interest. Meaning the Lillard trade saga may not end any time soon.
