Milwaukee didn't consult Giannis Antetokounmpo on Damian Lillard trade

The Milwaukee Bucks sent shockwaves through the NBA on September 27. The franchise acquired Damian Lillard in a three-team trade.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski , Milwaukee didn't consult Giannis Antetokounmpo before making the deal. Antetokounmpo has a close relationship with Jrue Holiday, who was part of the outgoing trade package.

"He [Giannis] literally played no role. In fact, Jon Horst, the Milwaukee Bucks GM, he did not bring this trade idea or sign off on it to Giannis Antetokounmpo because Jrue Holiday was involved...He decided ultimately, Jon Horst did, 'this is a decision I have to make as GM along with ownership.' And so, while Giannis didn't have any real direct influence on it, certainly in the broader scope, Horst makes this decision, the Bucks makes this decision believing it gives them more chance to win more titles."

Antetokounmpo recently put pressure on Milwaukee's front office. The veteran forward told the New York Times he wanted to see a commitment from his team and his teammates before signing a contract extension. If the former MVP had vetoed a move to acquire Lillard, it would have set alarm bells ringing within the franchise.

Lillard helps make the Bucks genuine contenders. Holiday has struggled to perform in the postseason.  However, Milwaukee's front office has taken a risk by not consulting their franchise player. Antetokounmpo has often spoken about loyalty and how important it is to him.

Still, Milwaukee's decision to acquire Portland's star guard would seem to be the commitment Antetokounmpo was looking for. The Bucks are all in on winning another championship and contending in the coming years. Lillard helps Milwaukee be a contender now. But, the veteran guard could also help keep Antetokounmpo around long term. In truth, that's what this trade is really about.
