Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter has received a lifetime ban from the NBA for violating the league’s gambling policy.

Among the allegations? That he bet on the Raptors to lose games in which he played.

Porter is the younger brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr.

NBA officials released a statement announcing the decision and explaining the ruling.

“A league investigation found that Porter violated league rules by disclosing confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games,” the statement read.

According to the league’s findings, Porter intentionally limited his participation in a March 20 game against the Sacramento Kings with the aim of influencing bets on his performance. Furthermore, he allegedly divulged confidential health information to an individual known to be an NBA bettor before the game.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, it was discovered that Porter had engaged in extensive betting activity from January through March 2024. While traveling with both the Raptors and the Raptors’ G League team, Porter placed at least 13 bets on NBA games using another person’s betting account. These wagers, ranging from $15 to $22,000, totaled $54,094. Despite not directly involving games in which Porter played, he bet against the Raptors’ success in three separate parlay bets, all of which resulted in losses.

This revelation casts a shadow over Porter’s young career and raises significant concerns about his integrity as a player. The NBA’s investigation underscores the seriousness of these allegations and the potential consequences for Porter and the league as a whole.

Porter, 24, hasn’t played since the NBA began its investigation into his alleged betting irregularities back on March 25. The Raptors removed him from the lineup before the game against the Brooklyn Nets on that same night.

Porter was on a two-way contract and in his first season with Toronto. He appeared in 26 games and averaged 4.4 points and 3.2 rebounds.
