Pistons made baffling moves at deadline

Thursday, the Detroit Pistons traded for a raw, athletic center from the University of Memphis. The problem is, they already had one.

The Pistons sent Saddiq Bey to the Hawks and received James Wiseman from the Warriors, a 7'1" center who was the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Wiseman is very physically gifted but is woefully inexperienced, playing only 60 games in three seasons with the Warriors. In college, Wiseman only played three games for the University of Memphis after the NCAA suspended him for accepting a loan from future coach Penny Hardaway.

Wiseman never got to play much for the Warriors, especially after missing his entire sophomore campaign after complications from knee surgery. This year, he got an extended assignment to the Santa Cruz Warriors of the G League just to get playing time.

That might be a problem in Detroit as well, because last June, they traded for a University of Memphis center, Jalen Duren. He's also a great athlete, stands 6'11", and left college after one year. Duren also needs a lot of playoff time to develop,

But Detroit also has another first-round center from the 2020 draft, Isaiah Stewart. "Beef Stew" can play power forward, but that's simply a lot of young bigs.

Detroit also declined to trade forward Bogdan Bogdanovic, who has an $18 million player option for next season.

Next year, 2021 No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham will be back, joining the young bigs, Jaden Ivey and Killian Hayes, Perhaps the Pistons feel like they have enough youth, and would prefer to have veterans like Bogdanovic around. But it felt like they missed some opportunities to add picks, and instead added a logjam at center.
