Report: Lakers 'highly motivated' to add 'significant player' this offseason

After a disappointing first-round playoff exit during the 2020-21 campaign, the Los Angeles Lakers are looking to add to their roster for another title run next season.

According to The Athletic's Sam Amick, the Lakers are "highly motivated to add another significant player to the roster and win it all again" in 2021-22.

The Lakers were unable to make a true title run last season due to injuries to Anthony Davis and LeBron James. In addition, players like Kyle Kuzma and Dennis Schroder proved to be ineffective in the postseason's most significant moments.

L.A. has been linked to several players this summer and would reportedly like an upgrade at point guard. According to Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated, Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook are atop the Lakers' wishlist.

For the Lakers to acquire Paul, it would likely take a sign-and-trade with the Phoenix Suns, Spears adds. However, if the 36-year-old declines his $44.2 million player option for the 2021-22 season, he'll likely sign a longer deal in Phoenix.

Westbrook, meanwhile, appears very much available as Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal also is considering a trade from the franchise.

In addition to Paul and Westbrook, the Lakers have been linked to DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, who are reportedly interested in signing with the franchise.

It's unclear if L.A. has eyes on any other players currently available. Regardless, James and Davis will likely tell ownership who they want, and ownership will have to work hard to fulfill their requests.
