Warriors won't file grievance about Gary Payton II trade

The Warriors filed a complaint against Portland last month. Now that Gary Payton II is healthy, they're letting it go.

At the trade deadline, the Warriors worked out a complicated four-team deal that sent 2020 No. 2 pick James Wiseman to Detroit, Saddiq Bey to Atlanta, five second-round picks to Portland and Gary Payton II to Golden State. But Payton failed his physical, and the Warriors learned he'd been taking the painkiller Toradol, which is when they filed the complaint.

Now? It's all good, apparently, now that Payton is likely to be back on the court Sunday night.

It's possible the Warriors really were blindsided by the Payton physical and the Toradol news. It was just a year ago that Larry Nance Jr. had knee surgery days after Portland traded him, so there may have been questions about how transparent the Blazers were about player injuries.

But the talk of protests may not have simply come from the disappointment of not having Payton available to shore up the Warriors' inconsistent defense. By trading Wiseman, the Warriors were effectively admitting they'd screwed up taking Wiseman second overall — one pick ahead of All-Star LaMelo Ball. Talking about the Blazers' malfeasance could have distracted from questions about the team's handling of Wiseman.

Regardless, Payton is back, the protest has been abandoned, the Blazers medical staff is vindicated and all is well for now. Although, we shouldn't expect these two teams to make a trade anytime soon.

And instead of debating the differences between oral and injectable Toradol, fans can simply enjoy Young Glove wreaking havoc on defense.
