Watch: Rough night for Joel Embiid ends with knee injury

Joel Embiid was having a rough game Tuesday night. Then he re-injured his left knee.

The reigning MVP committed his eighth turnover late in the 76ers' 119-107 loss to the Golden State Warriors. To add injury to insult, the Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga rolled over Embiid's leg to corral the loose ball.

As Stephen Curry scored a layup on the other end, Embiid winced in pain, as broadcaster Stan Van Gundy speculated that he'd hyperextended his knee.

It's terrible timing for the 76ers, who have lost four straight games and fell to fifth in the Eastern Conference on Tuesday night.

Embiid didn't seem healthy from the start, shooting 1-for-7 in the first quarter. He finished with eight turnovers and five fouls and shot 5-for-18 from the floor while going to and from the locker room.

Coach Nick Nurse told reporters that Embiid would get an MRI, but said that the collision was "unrelated to what he's been dealing with."

The game ended Embiid's streak of 22 consecutive games scoring 30 or more points. But it continued Kuminga's streak of seven straight games with 20 or more points.

The 21-year-old forward had 26 points on 11-for-19 shooting, and also grabbed seven rebounds and three steals.

Embiid is in danger of becoming ineligible to repeat as MVP, since he can only miss five more games and still hit the NBA's new 65-game threshold for awards eligibility.

Tuesday's injury may spur debate on the wisdom of the new standards, as the new rule may have influenced Embiid's decision to play on a knee that was clearly still bothering him.

But the new injury and losing streak may cost Philadelphia more than an individual award. Unless they can turn it around, they may be losing home-court advantage in the playoffs, along with their star center.
