If the selection process were based upon NFL Preseason performance, Chris Streveler would be a Pro Bowler.
According to head coach Robert Saleh. the New York Jets' fourth-string quarterback accounted for “one of the greatest preseasons in the history of football" last year.
Streveler, a former undrafted prospect out of NCAA Division I FCS member South Dakota, posted a 72.7 completion percentage while throwing for 277 yards and five touchdowns during the 2022 NFL Preseason. He connected on two game-winning scoring strikes and earned a 120.9 passer rating.
The 6-foot-1 Streveler cemented his fan favorite status by leading a 31-27 comeback victory over the rival New York Giants in the preseason finale. He went 10-of-13 passing for 96 yards and two scores, including the go-ahead touchdown toss with 22 seconds remaining.
With his preseason success coming mostly against reserve-level competition, Streveler lacks the ability to make the tight-window throws required of NFL starters.
Despite the shortcomings that have prevented him from moving up the depth chart, the 28-year old has shown good athleticism and a fierce competitive spirit during his time on the field.
Streveler is certainly an example of perseverance. After enrolling at Big Ten Conference member Minnesota and spending the large majority of three seasons on the bench, Streveler left for South Dakota where he became one of the top performers in NCAA FCS.
Streveler won the 2017 Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year Award while also finishing second overall in the voting for the Stats Perform Walter Payton Award.
After going undrafted, the South Dakota product launched his professional career with the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2018.
