49ers' Brock Purdy on Tom Brady: 'He’s been playing football longer than I’ve been alive'

This coming Sunday's game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Francisco 49ers will present a matchup between two very different quarterbacks. 

Future Hall of Famer Tom Brady turned 45 years old this past August and has seven Super Bowl titles on his generational résumé. He is on track to lead the Buccaneers into Sunday's encounter against San Francisco rookie Brock Purdy. Purdy was the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft and likely figured he'd be a spectator all campaign. He was thrust into the national spotlight during a 33-17 win over the Miami Dolphins after 49ers starter Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a season-ending broken left foot. 

Garoppolo previously replaced 2021 first-round draft choice Trey Lance after Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. 

"A lot of people have said a lot of things about me like, I’m not good enough, this or that," Purdy told NBC Sports' Peter King for Monday's "Football Morning in America" column. "I just trust in God, and I’ll continue to do what I do—put my head down and go to work." 

King then asked Purdy what it will be like to prepare to face a living legend such as Brady. 

"Pretty cool," Purdy said. "The G.O.A.T. He’s been playing football longer than I’ve been alive." 

Purdy was born on December 27, 1999, while the New England Patriots famously made Brady pick No. 199 in the 2000 NFL Draft. Against Miami, Purdy completed 25-of-37 pass attempts (67.6%) for 210 yards with two touchdowns and an interception as he helped the 49ers improve to 8-4 on the season. 

Meanwhile, the 5-6 Buccaneers host the 4-8 New Orleans Saints on Monday night.
