49ers take Iowa State QB Brock Purdy as 'Mr. Irrelevant' with final pick of draft

The San Francisco 49ers held the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, otherwise known as "Mr. Irrelevant," and selected Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy.

Purdy led the Big 12 in completions each of the last three seasons. In 2021, he led the conference in completion percentage (71.1) and passing yards (3,188).

The 6-foot-1 signal-caller started 13 games, leading the Cyclones to a 7-6 record last season. Purdy finished with 19 passing touchdowns and rushed for 238 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

In four seasons at Iowa State, Purdy played in 48 games, throwing for 12,170 yards, 81 touchdowns, and 33 interceptions. He finished with 1,117 rushing yards off 365 attempts with 19 rushing touchdowns.

The "Mr. Irrelevant" selection gained infamy after former NFL wide receiver Paul Salata started an annual event in 1976 to celebrate the pick.

Purdy is the sixth quarterback selected with the "Mr. Irrelevant" pick and the first since 2017 when the Denver Broncos chose Chad Kelly out of Ole Miss.

Wide receivers (8) have been chosen more than any other position with the "Mr. Irrelevant" selection. Meanwhile, punter is the only position yet to be selected with the pick.
