49ers coach Kyle Shanahan defends overtime rules after controversial Chiefs-Bills finish

A day after the Kansas City Chiefs advanced to the AFC Championship with an overtime victory against the Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan defended the current NFL overtime format.

Kansas City and Buffalo combined for 25 points in the last two minutes of regulation before the Chiefs quickly scored a touchdown in overtime. Many complained that the coin toss tilted the game in the Chiefs' favor and that the overtime format needs an overhaul.

In 11 playoff games since the overtime rules were changed, teams that won the coin toss are 10-1, with seven winning by scoring a touchdown on their first possession.

The 49ers played two overtime games during the regular season and won both. In the first, the Cincinnati Bengals won the coin toss and took the lead with a field goal before the 49ers won with a touchdown. In the second, San Francisco kicked a field goal and then held the Los Angeles Rams scoreless on their possession.
