Chiefs HC Andy Reid thinks both teams should get football during overtime periods

As Chris Bumbaca explained for USA Today, the Kansas City Chiefs attempted to get the NFL to change its rules regarding overtime periods in 2019, roughly three years before they defeated the Buffalo Bills in Sunday's instant classic that ended after the Chiefs scored a touchdown in their one and only offensive possession of OT. 

Per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid admitted on Monday he's "glad we didn’t change" the overtime rule but added he thinks it would be fair for both offenses to touch the football during such periods. 

"That, I’m sure, is something they’re going to look at again," Reid said of team owners potentially embracing a rule change. "I wouldn’t be opposed to it. That’s a hard thing. It was great for us last night, but is it great for the game, which is the most important thing we should all be looking out for? To make things equal, it probably needs to be able to hit both offenses, both defenses." 

Critics of any switch will point out that, in the case of Sunday's game, the Buffalo defense could've gotten the ball back for quarterback Josh Allen had it merely made a handful of stops or even held the Chiefs to a field goal in overtime. As Reid said, though, ensuring that both offenses could make plays during overtime (minus a defensive touchdown) could boost the entertainment values of contests but could also extend games and, thus, lead to more players suffering injuries. 

Needless to say, it seems a given this topic will be widely discussed during the upcoming offseason.
