49ers GM addresses Brock Purdy returning to injury site

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy said on Thursday he's not dwelling on the fact that Sunday's contest at the 10-1 Philadelphia Eagles will occur where he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow during this past January's NFC Championship Game.

49ers general manager John Lynch expanded on Purdy's mindset during a Friday appearance on San Francisco sports radio station KNBR.

"I don't think Brock's making too much of that, and that's not just lip service," Lynch explained, according to David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. "Obviously, he knows that this is where the unfortunate injury happened. But I think what more so is on Brock's mind is the challenge of playing against a really good football team and finding a way to go beat them. And that's the way Brock thinks. That's the way he functions."

Purdy underwent surgery on March 10 and combined hard work with some lifestyle changes to ensure he'd be good to go by Week 1 this past September. According to ESPN stats, the second-year pro heads into the weekend leading the NFL with a 112.3 passer rating, a 70.2% completion percentage and an average of 9.4 yards per pass attempt on the season. He's second with a 75.2 adjusted QBR, and he's tossed 19 touchdown passes with six interceptions en route to helping the 49ers get to 8-3.

"The preparation he put into his recovery from this injury, beating timelines, exceeding timelines by just coming to work every day and finding a way to get better, that's just what Brock does," Lynch added about his QB1.

As of Friday afternoon, oddschecker listed the 49ers as three-point road favorites against the Eagles. That same outlet had the Niners as the betting favorites at +430 odds to win Super Bowl LVIII in February, and it listed Purdy sixth among the betting favorites at +1300 odds to claim the Most Valuable Player Award.
