Another NFC East team linked to Saquon Barkley ahead of free agency

Star running back Saquon Barkley might stay in the NFC East.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported  that some in league circles believe the Dallas Cowboys "will pursue" the free agent.

However, Jordan Raanan of ESPN noted that the Cowboys "aren't expected to reach the [two-time Pro Bowler's] price point." The Philadelphia Eagles are in the same boat. Spotrac estimates Dallas has $8.8M in cap room. Barkley's market value is a three-year deal worth $9.9M annually.

The Cowboys' run game has room for improvement. In 2023, Dallas finished 15th in the league in rushing yards (113.5). Starting RB Tony Pollard—also a free agent—rushed for 1,005 yards in 17 games but lost some of his explosive playmaking ability, averaging a career-low four yards per carry.

While Barkley is a bigger star than Pollard, it's easy to argue he's not a clear upgrade. In 14 games with the New York Giants in 2023,  the 27-year-old rushed for 962 yards on 247 carries (3.9 yards per carry) and six touchdowns.

He could thrive in a better offense, but durability is another concern. Barkley has battled ankle injuries throughout his career and tore his ACL in 2020. He hasn't played a full season since his rookie year in 2018.

Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News recently reported Pollard is willing to stay with the Cowboys even if another team offers a larger contract.

If Dallas rolls with Pollard again instead of Barkley, that decision wouldn't be unwarranted. The 26-year-old might bounce back in 2024 and is a cheaper option. His market value is a two-year deal worth $6.5M annually.
