Bears activate RB David Montgomery ahead of Steelers game

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy confirmed last week that lead running back David Montgomery was designated to return from injured reserve after he missed the past four games with a knee sprain. The Bears had 21 days to elevate Montgomery to the active roster at that time but didn't need to wait nearly that long.

Chicago announced that Montgomery has been activated ahead of Monday's prime-time matchup at the 4-3 Pittsburgh Steelers. The news was expected, as Nagy told reporters Saturday there was a "really good chance" Montgomery would be added to the active roster as the 3-5 Bears look to end a three-game losing streak.

Montgomery originally hurt his knee in the 24-14 win over the Detroit Lions on Oct. 3. Thus far, he has 309 rushing yards and three touchdowns to go along with six catches for 49 yards.

Rookie and sixth-round draft pick Khalil Herbert became Chicago's top option out of the backfield in Montgomery's absence and impressed. Herbert now leads the team with 351 rushing yards and 81 carries and should still see a decent amount of work, especially if Nagy and company plan to ease Montgomery back into action.

Chicago is on its bye after Monday night, so Montgomery will have extra time to get right following the Pittsburgh contest.
