Bills' Sean McDermott discusses Stefon Diggs controversy

Stefon Diggs of the Buffalo Bills participated in Wednesday's mandatory minicamp session, and head coach Sean McDermott sounded eager to put any controversy to bed involving the star wide receiver. 

"There are a lot of things out there that aren’t accurate," McDermott explained about what remains a curious situation, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "Let me be clear: Stef did everything that he was asked to do. He was here Monday, he executed his physical on time. Stef reported yesterday, Tuesday, and reported for meetings, at which time we had a great conversation, great communication. We got to a point yesterday where we just felt like we all needed a break and some space. So I gave Stef permission to get some space and head out, and then picked up those conversations after practice."

McDermott previously acknowledged he was "very concerned" after it was reported Tuesday that Diggs didn't report to mandatory minicamp, but that was before Diggs' agent and the Bills insisted the 29-year-old had been at the team's facility on Monday and Tuesday. Later in the day, quarterback Josh Allen appeared to accept some blame for Diggs' absence when the signal-caller said that "there’s things I could do better to help out with this process and try to get him back here and be the Buffalo Bill that he’s meant to be." 

During this year's NFL combine, both McDermott and Bills general manager Brandon Beane defended Diggs less than two full months after the three-time Pro Bowl selection confronted Allen during Buffalo's 27-10 home playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Diggs ultimately skipped the team's voluntary offseason training program before this week's developments that NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport (h/t Nick Shook) said were not related to the receiver's contract. 

Diggs addressed the matter via Instagram on Tuesday evening before he showed up for work on Wednesday: 

Meanwhile, McDermott indicated Wednesday the unspecified issue involving Diggs is now "resolved" before the summer break. 

"...Let me make it clear, it was not Stef leaving unexcused," McDermott added. "He was excused by me. And so those conversations got us to what I think and believe is a great spot."

McDermott's comments did little to answer numerous questions fans and analysts, alike, have about why Diggs left the facility on Tuesday. If anything, it seems this saga could hover over the Bills through and beyond the start of training camp.
