Brittany Brees has revealed that her family received death threats following Drew's comments anthem protests. Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Drew Brees’ comments about the American flag and national anthem provoked a firestorm of controversy this week, and a wave of responses that clearly unsettled his family.

Brees’ wife Brittany posted her own apology for her husband’s comments on Sunday, remarking that “we are the problem” for thinking they had been doing enough to combat racism or injustice. From the Brees Dream Foundation’s Instagram account, she also revealed that her family had received death threats in the wake of Drew’s original comments.

Things have certainly changed since Brees’ initial statement. Not only has he apologized, but he even responded to President Trump’s critical comments about his initial apology.

Death threats always cross a line, and it appears that the Brees family had learned a lesson without them. Hopefully things can be more constructive going forward.
