Broncos waive WR DaeSean Hamilton with non-football injury designation

The saga involving wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton and the Denver Broncos has come to an unfortunate end.

Denver confirmed on Tuesday that it has waived Hamilton with a non-football injury designation. The 2018 draft selection was previously deemed surplus to requirements and made available to other teams ahead of the draft, and the Broncos were prepared to release him last week after no club came calling.

The situation changed, however, after teams showed interest in the 26-year-old set to be on the final year of his rookie contract once they learned Hamilton could hit the open market. Denver was reportedly on the verge of finalizing an agreement to trade Hamilton following the weekend's rookie minicamp sessions, but he suffered a torn ACL training on his own.

As Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk noted, the Broncos won't be on the hook for Hamilton's base salary of $2.183 million because he was injured away from their facility. The Broncos recently released tackle Ja'Wuan James after he tore his Achilles working out away from Denver's complex.

Hamilton appeared in 46 of a potential 48 games the past three seasons and recorded 81 catches for 833 yards and five touchdowns. It's highly likely he won't play again until 2022 preseason games unless he ventures outside the NFL early next year.
