Browns TE David Njoku requests trade, agent says it's in 'best interest to find a new team'

The Cleveland Browns exercised their 2021 option on David Njoku's contract, but the tight end has informed the team he'd like to play somewhere else.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Njoku has requested a trade from the Browns ahead of the 2020 campaign.

Njoku's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told Schefter he informed the team on Friday of his request, but the Browns responded by saying they want to keep the 2017 first-round pick.

The 23-year-old Njoku would like to see a move made before training camp begins this month, though it remains to be seen which teams would be interested in him.

Njoku's trade request likely is because the Browns signed two-time Pro Bowl tight end Austin Hooper to a four-year, $44 million contract this offseason and selected Harrison Bryant in the fourth round of the NFL Draft.

Njoku played two seasons with the Browns before appearing in just four games last season due to a broken wrist. He has 93 receptions for 1,066 yards and nine touchdowns in his career.

He's slated to make a little more than $3 million against the cap this season and $6 million in 2021.
