Browns waive 2022 draft pick
The Browns decided to part ways with one of their youngest players on Wednesday morning after he found himself in the news for the wrong reason a day ago.
Cleveland announced that it released DT Perrion Winfrey, who is reportedly under investigation for allegedly threatening a woman on Tuesday night.
Winfrey, the Browns' fourth-round pick from the 2022 NFL Draft, had 22 tackles and 0.5 sack as a rookie in 2022. He will now need to hope another team gives him a second chance in the NFL.
The move certainly sends a message to the rest of the team that the organization won't tolerate such behavior after a noisy offseason last year.
Fans did have high hopes for Winfrey heading into his second year, but Cleveland signed DT Dalvin Tomlinson and drafted DT Siaki Ika this offseason, making him expendable.
The Browns have put a lot of focus on rebuilding its defensive front, also trading for DE Za'Darius Smith and signing DE Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, and waiving Winfrey is just one of the many moves the team has made to its new-look group.
Cleveland has an important season ahead in 2023 as it hopes to make it back to the postseason for the first time since the 2020 season. Removing a potential distraction in Winfrey could certainly help.
