Bruce Arians offers blunt assessment of Daniel Jones after loss: 'He's still trying to do too much'

Daniel Jones struggled again in the New York Giants' loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, throwing two costly interceptions to extend his turnover streak to nine games. And Bucs coach Bruce Arians offered a tough but honest assessment of the second-year quarterback after the game, essentially saying that he gave Tampa Bay the opportunity to win the game

"The young quarterback (Jones) – he's still trying to do too much," Arians said. "When you're in the grass with those guys, it cost them basically the ballgame throwing those two picks. God bless him – he is hard to handle and he's a kid that thinks he can make a play."

The Giants took a surprising lead over the Bucs in the first half, but Tampa Bay was able to come back thanks to Jones' turnovers, scoring 10 points and getting themselves back into the game. It's become a recurring problem for Jones and the Giants, as they seem destined for another high draft pick with a 1-6 record, bad enough for last place in the awful NFC East.

If the Giants do end up with another top pick, could they end up drafting Jones' replacement? The team has insisted they still believe in Jones, with coach Joe Judge saying after the game that "Daniel's our quarterback, clearly put."

But if Jones can't quit that pesky turnover habit, the Giants may have no choice but to grab one of the top quarterbacks in the 2021 draft, which is expected to include Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields.
