Bucs 'getting closer' to reworking Tom Brady's contract?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said last month that working out a Tom Brady contract extension is a possibility. It appears that extension could be completed sooner rather than later.

According to ESPN's Josina Anderson, the Buccaneers are "getting closer" to reworking Brady's contract.

Now, this doesn't necessarily mean Brady is being extended past the 2021 season. The 43-year-old quarterback said he would consider playing past age 45, but a reworking of his contract could be because Tampa Bay has several key free agents to re-sign.

Leonard Fournette, Rob Gronkowski, Lavonte David, Shaquil Barrett and Antonio Brown are among the team's top free agents looking for new deals. Brady currently carries a cap hit over $28 million for 2021 and hasn't refused to take less money in the past to help keep talented players around for another title run.

Brady won his seventh Super Bowl title last season and was already thinking about winning his eighth championship while hoisting the Lombardi Trophy at Raymond James Stadium. Reworking his contract to keep several key free agents would help the Bucs remain as title contenders with many teams around the league, including the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints, looking to match Tampa Bay this offseason.
