Buddy system: Jacoby Brissett should be Eagles' backup QB

Could Nick Sirianni’s BFF become the Philadelphia Eagles' next backup QB? Now that Gardner Minshew is a free agent, it's the perfect time for the head coach and Jacoby Brissett to reunite.

In 2016, Brissett was a third-round pick of the New England Patriots. A year later, he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts. Indianapolis hired Sirianni as offensive coordinator in 2018. At the time, Andrew Luck was the starter, but when he announced his retirement in 2019, the Colts gave the job to Brissett .

With Sirianni calling plays that year, Brissett threw for 2,942 yards and 18 touchdowns with six interceptions. Brissett threw for a career-high 18 TDs that season, but he was benched in 2020 when the team signed Philip Rivers.

Sirianni and Brissett enjoyed their time together with the Colts, and both speak fondly of each other. When asked by Rob Maaddi of The Associated Press about Sirianni’s chances as Eagles head coach, Brissett praised his old coordinator:

“One thing about Nick, he thinks about every situation possible," he said. "And I think that’s what will set him apart from a lot of these coaches. I’m excited to see how it goes ... I think he’s going to be one of the good ones in this league.”

Apparently, the feeling is mutual. Sirianni has praised Brissett’s leadership and toughness, describing him as someone who would play without toes if necessary.

Minshew went winless in two starts last season while Brissett won four games with the Browns. “Brissett-Mania” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but if Minshew moves on, Sirianni should add Brissett.
