Cam Newton was all set to be the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots in 2021.

The team drafted Mac Jones in the first round of the NFL Draft, but it was Newton’s job to lose.

And not only did he lose the job, but he lost his job in general when he was cut by the Patriots before the start of the season.

Newton continues to sit on the free agent market and declared in a recent YouTube video that he is ready to return.

Newton also mentioned he is vaccinated against COVID-19.

Reports of this emerged over the weekend and Newton has officially confirmed it to be true.

Not having the vaccine before, and missing time due to protocols, could have played a role in him being let go by the Patriots in the first place.

Finding A Fit

So where could Newton land this season?

At this point in his career he may only want to play for a contender.

That would eliminate a team like the Houston Texans or even the Miami Dolphins, who are off to terrible starts this season.

The problem with the logic of adding Newton to a contender is that he plays the quarterback position.

It would be extremely difficult for a contending team to add a new quarterback in the middle of the season especially when he has not been in the building before.

Being vaccinated makes Newton more available, but that doesn’t change the fact that teams may not want to go with him over a backup who has been on the roster all year.

Preparing For 2022

Newton may ultimately have to wait until next year to make his return to the NFL.

That could work in his favor as he would have plenty of time to heal from any lingering health issues.

Yet to be fair, 2019 was the only season in his career where he missed legitimate time.

That came with the Carolina Panthers, who may be seeking some quarterback help right about now.

Could that be the perfect fit?

While some fans in Carolina may like the idea, 2022 may still be the target for Newton to come back and lead a team from the start of the offseason.

Having a desire to play is one thing.

Finding the perfect situation is another.
