Chargers to designate RB Austin Ekeler for return ahead of Bills game

The Los Angeles Chargers are ready to welcome a key offensive piece back to the rotation.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Chargers will designate running back Austin Ekeler to return off injured reserve, meaning the 25-year-old will practice for the first time since he suffered a hamstring injury during the 38-31 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back in Week 4.

It's unknown if Ekeler will take the field for Sunday's game at the Buffalo Bills. Los Angeles improved to 3-7 on the campaign via last Sunday's 34-28 victory over the winless New York Jets but could nevertheless give Ekeler additional time to return to 100 percent before a showdown with the New England Patriots on Dec. 6.

During Ekeler's absence, the Chargers have turned to the likes of Joshua Kelley, Justin Jackson, and, most recently, Jets castoff Kalen Ballage. Ballage recently recorded team-highs with 44 rushing yards and 16 carries versus his former employer, and the 24-year-old also contributed seven receptions for 27 yards in that win.

Ballage has accumulated 181 rushing yards with a touchdown and 14 receptions for 76 yards in his three games as a member of the Chargers.
