Former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy is officially going back to his roots. After spending last season as the Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach, Nagy has been named as the team’s next offensive coordinator.

This promotion comes shortly after former Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was officially introduced in the same role with the Washington Commanders.

While this past season represented a homecoming of sorts for Mr. Nagy, he now officially takes over the same role he held with Kansas City back in 2017. That season saw Nagy oversee an offense that was led by veteran Alex Smith with then-rookie Patrick Mahomes backing him up.

Nagy, 44, ultimately turned this into a head-coaching stint with the aforementioned Bears. He posted a 34-31 record in four seasons with Chicago before being fired following the 2021 campaign. That span included Nagy leading Chicago to two playoff appearances. Prior to his arrival, Chicago had made all of one playoff appearance over the preceding 11 seasons.

The promotion of Nagy to offensive coordinator made perfect sense for Andy Reid and the defending champion Chiefs. He knows full well the type of offense that Reid likes to run. It will be a seamless transition from Bieniemy.

While Nagy is unlikely to call plays moving forward, he will be one of the individuals working closely with Reid and Mahomes to formulate a game plan. With Nagy coaching him last season, Mahomes earned both the NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP awards, joining elite company in the process.

As for Nagy, this could potentially be a steppingstone to another head-coaching gig down the road. There was no reason for him to look elsewhere given what the Chiefs have in place.
