Chiefs' coach Matt Nagy responds to Patrick Mahomes' wild draft story

Patrick Mahomes recently shared a wild NFL Draft story, crediting coach Matt Nagy for helping him become a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. Mahomes said Nagy gave him advanced access to plays he was to go over with head coach Andy Reid ahead of the 2017 Draft, essentially helping the quarterback cheat. 

On Thursday, when asked by reporters if he'd helped Mahomes out, Nagy said, "Maybe a little bit." 

Mahomes told his now viral story on this week's New Heights podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce while the trio discussed the NFL draft process. Nagy reflected on the year the Chiefs selected Mahomes, saying it was "Safe to say there was a major consensus in our building of who we liked." 

If Nagy's interference impacted the Chiefs' plans to select Mahomes or not, we may never know. Regardless, Mahomes coming to the Chiefs changed the franchise forever. Since Nagy's fateful decision, things have changed significantly for all involved. Mahomes is among the best players in the entire NFL six years later, winning the MVP award in his sophomore season before leading the Chiefs to a victory in Super Bowl LIV two seasons later. 

Meanwhile, Nagy left Kansas City the year after the Chiefs drafted Mahomes to take the head coaching job with the Chicago Bears. Nagy went 34-31 and 0-2 in the playoffs over four seasons in Chicago before being fired after the 2021 season. The Chiefs brought Nagy back as a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach last offseason.
