Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes ditches walking boot in Augusta

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes aggravated an injury to the big toe of his left foot during the playoff victory over the Cleveland Browns in January and ultimately required surgery to repair the issue following the Super Bowl LV loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The one-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player is in Augusta for the Masters and shared on Thursday that he was at least temporarily out of the walking boot he'd previously sported following the procedure:

As Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio noted, it's possible and maybe even likely the walking boot was briefly discarded only for a photo session, but there's currently no reason to expect the 25-year-old will miss the start of training camp sessions.

On Easter Sunday, Mahomes suggested his recovery remains right on schedule:

"It’s almost like people have forgotten that Patrick Mahomes had major foot surgery, toe surgery after the Super Bowl," NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said on Monday, per Pete Grathoff of The Kansas City Star. "I mean we talked about it seemingly every day leading up to the Super Bowl and then everyone saw Mahomes in that walking boot and they’re like, ‘What happened?’ I know, because I had to explain to my two sons yesterday why he’s wearing a walking boot and what actually was happening.

"So yes, Patrick Mahomes had surgery, It was major. Everything is going extremely well. He’s been diligent from my understanding, in rehab. He is on track to be ready when he should be ready. Remember, it’s a matter of several months, not weeks. What I’m told is that when the real football starts, which should be in July for training camp, Patrick Mahomes will be good to go and absolutely fine. That’s the best news that the Chiefs could ask for."
