Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes gives inspiring speech to Texas Tech graduates

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes knows a little thing or two about persevering and overcoming your biggest challenges to find success, and that's exactly what he discussed in the inspiring speech he gave to this year's Texas Tech graduates amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Mahomes said in his remarks, according to ESPN's Adam Teicher:

"I know this isn't the graduation ceremony that you and your families had envisioned, but that doesn't change the outcome or all the hard work, long hours and sacrifices that you made to achieve this milestone. I know this is sure not how you imagined spending your last days as a student.

"But the world is in a different place today than it was just a few weeks ago. And as Red Raiders, we're built to persevere in difficult times. We've all had to take a moment and learn to adjust to these new challenges. And when the odds are stacked against us, we make a play — and I can tell you this is going to make us all more competitive and hungrier than ever."

In his final remarks, Mahomes told the 2020 class to "go out and win your Super Bowl," on top of congratulating them for their hard work. Mahomes, who also played baseball at Texas Tech, was the school's quarterback from 2014 to '16 before being selected by the Chiefs in the 2017 NFL Draft. The former Red Raider threw for 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns during his three collegiate seasons while rushing for 845 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Since leaving Texas Tech, Mahomes has been the school's biggest support in all sports and went to Minneapolis last year to watch the men's basketball team in the Final Four.

Mahomes isn't the only athlete to give a commencement speech this year amid the coronavirus pandemic. Seattle Seahawks twin brothers Shaquill and Shaquem Griffin spoke to Central Florida's 2020 class and also gave a similarly inspiring speech.
