Co-owner Clark Hunt: Patrick Mahomes wants to be a 'Chief for life'

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is expected to be the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL when he signs an extension, and Kansas City CEO Clark Hunt revealed the organization will begin contract talks with the Super Bowl champion as early as this summer.

"He wants to be a Kansas City Chief for life, and that's our mentality as well," Hunt said on a FaceBook Live event on 105.3 The Fan. "We want him to play his entire career in Kansas City, and that's what we're going to be shooting for."

Mahomes is set to make $5.3 million in 2020 and $24.8 million the following year as the Chiefs picked up his fifth-year option. For his next deal, the Chiefs are expected to offer him at least $40 million per season, making him the highest-paid player in NFL history.

Signing Mahomes to a record-setting deal is going to be an easy decision for the Chiefs after he led the organization to a Super Bowl title last season and has been dominant since becoming Kansas City's starting QB in 2018.

The young quarterback threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns in his 2018 MVP season and completed 65.9 percent of his passes for 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns while playing the majority of 2019 with a knee injury.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is currently the highest-paid player in the NFL at $35 million per season, but Mahomes certainly will crush that mark. There's been no doubt that Kansas City will retain the talented QB, and with Mahomes under center, the Chiefs will continue to be Super Bowl favorites for many years to come.
