Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Players had goosebumps from familiar visitor's speech before AFC title game

Head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday that former Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy made a speech to members of the team before their AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes later discussed how much of an impact hearing from the familiar face had on the group.

Reid not only said that his former colleague's coaching future was "great," but the former AP Coach of the Year added that he believes Bieniemy will earn another gig.

The 54-year-old was not retained by incoming Commanders head coach Dan Quinn after just one season with Washington. Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury was hired as the Commanders' new offensive coordinator on Monday.

Bieniemy's departure from the nation's capital comes at a time when Reid's future as an NFL coach remains up in the air.

The 65-year-old became the oldest active head coach in the league in January when Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll parted ways with the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, respectively.

Bieniemy spent five years as Kansas City's offensive coordinator from 2018-2022, earning two Super Bowl rings. Despite being one of the most popular names in last year's head-coaching cycle, he was tabbed as Washington's offensive coordinator and assistant head coach in February 2023.

The Commanders had the 25th-ranked scoring offense (19.4 points per game) this past season.
