Chiefs HC Andy Reid not thinking about retirement headed into Super Bowl LVIII

Multiple individuals associated with the Kansas City Chiefs recently poured cold water over the idea that head coach Andy Reid could retire if he guides the club to a win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII this Sunday. 

Reid addressed his future himself while speaking with reporters on Tuesday.

"My mom and dad told me this when they were working,'' Reid explained, as shared by Adam Teicher of ESPN. "They said, 'You'll know when it's time,' and I'm ready to go right now. Let's go. That's what they would tell me when I was young. I was an inquisitive kid and so that's the way I look [at it]. Somewhere you're going to know when it's time. Today's not the day.''

Even before the Chiefs secured their fourth Super Bowl trip in five seasons by defeating the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship, multiple NFL insiders speculated that Reid could retire ahead of his 66th birthday in March. 

According to Michael Freer of Pro Football Network, Reid is attempting to become the fifth NFL head coach to have at least three Super Bowl victories on a resume. 

"I love being part of the organization,'' Reid said. "It's a great organization. And then we've won some games, but we've got to keep going. We've got to keep after this thing.''

Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has repeatedly been mentioned as a possible replacement for Reid. It's believed the Atlanta Falcons were the only team to show a serious interest in potentially hiring Belichick this offseason, but Falcons owner Arthur Blank instead chose Raheem Morris as the club's next head coach. 

Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt insisted on Tuesday that "it would definitely be premature" to begin making any preparations for Reid's possible retirement. 

"I don't have a sense for what he's thinking,'' Hunt said about Reid. "I do know he's really engaged and enjoying it and I have no sense that he's going to be ready to retire in the near future. But in terms of how long it goes, I don't know. Certainly, I hope it's a long time in the future, but we'll just have to see as we go.''

Whether or not Reid wants his final act as an NFL head coach to occur at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas this Sunday shall be seen.
