After having one of the worst offensive lines in football last season, the Washington Commanders have invested in fixing the trenches on the first day of the tampering period.

The Commanders' latest move to improve the trenches on offense was agreeing to a three-year, $16 million deal with Kansas City Chiefs offensive guard Nick Allegretti on Monday, according to NFL insider Ari Meirov.

Allegretti stepped up after the Chiefs lost Joe Thuney during the playoffs, as he started in the AFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl. Allegretti played most of his 79 snaps in the Super Bowl after a torn UCL after suffering the injury in the second quarter.

Allegretti is the Commanders' second signing on the offensive line during the tampering period, as they also agreed to a three-year, $30 million deal with Dallas Cowboys center Tyler Biadasz.

Given that the Commanders allowed the second-most sacks in the NFL last season (65), they had to shore up the offensive line regardless of who is their quarterback next season. The signings of Allegretti and Biadasz are steps in the right direction to protect whoever is under center for them to begin the Dan Quinn era.

Allegretti's contract can become official when the new league year begins tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET.
