Chiefs' Tyrann Mathieu on track to play vs. Ravens

Kansas City Chiefs three-time First-Team All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Sept. 1 after he tested positive for the virus but was activated before Sunday's win over the Cleveland Browns. Mathieu did not, however, play in the season opener.

According to Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters Monday that Mathieu is on track to return to the field for this coming Sunday's showdown with the Baltimore Ravens. Additionally, Reid explained defensive end Frank Clark was "on the edge of being right" for the Cleveland contest as he works to recover from a hamstring issue that bothered him throughout training camp.

"As I’m sitting here right now, yes, [Mathieu will] be back," Reid said during his press conference. "And that was more of the conditioning part and just not putting him in a bad position. So little different than Frank’s, but kind of that same thinking — I thought it was best if we just had him sit this game and come back for the next one."

The Kansas City defense had a difficult first half against a high-powered Cleveland offense but then held the Browns to just seven points over the final two quarters of play as quarterback Patrick Mahomes guided the home team to a come-from-behind 33-29 victory.

The Chiefs play at the Ravens in the Week 2 "Sunday Night Football" matchup.
