Colin Cowherd floats dark-horse team as possible Bill Belichick landing spot

It was reported last week that the Philadelphia Eagles could move on from head coach Nick Sirianni if the team loses its Super Wild Card Weekend matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday night.

Though the Eagles are 2.5-point favorites, per DraftKings, they lost five of their last six games to close out the regular season with back-to-back losses to non-playoff teams (Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants).

Should they lose again and indeed fire Sirianni, Fox Sports NFL analyst Colin Cowherd believes the Eagles could make sense as a possible landing spot for the recently fired Bill Belichick.

“This is the place that nobody is discussing with Belichick because it’s not open, but I think it’s a real possibility,” Cowherd said on Monday. “Strong ownership, excellent personnel guy — what they need is somebody to shore up their linebackers and their secondary. That’s literally Bill Belichick’s forte. He wouldn’t have to be the personnel guru, he wouldn’t talk much with the owner…they’ve got the quarterback, the receivers, tight ends, O-line.”

Though Sirianni took the Eagles to the Super Bowl just last season, there have been plenty of recent reports suggesting that he’s not only clashed with players but ownership as well.

Philly’s locker-room culture has been called into question in recent weeks as the tension between Eagles players and the coaching staff has boiled over.

“Nick Sirianni, between his juvenile sideline antics and theatrics, his anxiety at the podium and the total erosion of the Eagles offense — and he’s an offensive guy — it appears that Nick Sirianni is a bit over his skis.”

Belichick parted ways with the New England Patriots last week after 24 seasons with the organization that included 18 playoff appearances, 17 division titles and six Super Bowl championships.

The 71-year-old coach is just 27 wins away from breaking Don Shula’s record for most regular-season head-coaching wins in NFL history, per Pro Football Reference

Belichick has been linked to the Atlanta Falcons, but the Eagles could be a far more desirable destination should the job become available given the talent on their roster and they’re already considered a Super Bowl contender.
