Commanders' Carson Wentz understands losing job to Taylor Heinicke

Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz admitted Wednesday he understands why he lost his starting job to Taylor Heinicke until further notice.

"I get it," Wentz explained about the situation, according to John Keim of ESPN. "It's part of the business. I understand where we are as a team. Obviously, as a competitor you want to be out there; I'd be lying to you. You come to work, you want to play, it's what you sign up for.

"At the same time, I have a great relationship with Taylor and all the guys. I've been happy to see him succeed and what he's been able to do. I'll do what I can to help and support him and be part of this and stay ready because this league is crazy and things happen."

The Commanders were 2-4 when Wentz required surgery to repair the fractured right ring finger he suffered playing against the Chicago Bears on Oct. 13. Since that time, Heinicke has gone 4-1 as a starter and has the 6-5 Commanders in the "on the bubble" portion of the playoff picture ahead of Sunday's against the 5-6 Atlanta Falcons.

Wentz was activated to start practicing Wednesday but won't be on the active roster this Sunday. His status for the Week 13 game at the New York Giants on Dec. 4 is unclear.

In his first five starts this fall, Heinicke completed 60.8% of his pass attempts for 1,031 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions. Per ESPN stats, his 46.4 total QBR on the campaign would be good for 22nd in the league among qualified passers.

The Commanders traded with the Indianapolis Colts for Wentz in March, but the 29-year-old's future in Washington is now up in the air. He addressed that reality Wednesday and said that "next week will take care of itself" and that he will "just be ready for what comes."
