Update: Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reports that Borgonzi has been tabbed for the Commanders' head of football ops job, and not a GM position. It's safe to say that might be a downgrade from the assistant GM role in Kansas City. It's possible that the Chiefs could block the interview request in that case.
The Washington Commanders are casting a wide net in their coaching and general manager searches.
One of the Kansas City Chiefs' top front office executives is squarely on their radar. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Commanders have requested permission to interview Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi for their general manager job.
Borgonzi has risen through the ranks of the Chiefs' organization over the past 14 years. He started as a College Scouting Administrator before earning several promotions on his way to becoming a top executive for the franchise. He's served in several different roles, ranging from Director of Player Personnel, Director of Football Ops, and most recently Assistant General Manager in Kansas City.
During Brett Veach's tenure as general manager, Borgonzi has earned the reputation of being the GM's right-hand man. He's played a role in the selection of some franchise cornerstones such as Travis Kelce and L'Jarius Sneed. In Borgonzi's first season as the team's Assistant General Manager, the Chiefs landed players like Creed Humphrey, Nick Bolton, Noah Grey, and Trey Smith.
The Commanders have not yet fired GM Martin Mayhew, who has agreed to stay on through the team's coaching search. It's possible that he could take another role in the organization or he'll at least advise the team on the best path forward.
