Cowboys not planning to make move before trade deadline, but they should

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indicated the team will stand pat before the trade deadline on Oct. 31, which would be a mistake.

"That's not just showing a lack of aggressiveness, it's just that where it starts," Jones said Tuesday on KRLD-FM in Dallas, per Yahoo Sports NFL reporter Jori Epstein. "I like where we are with our personnel today. So I'm not thinking in any way we need to upgrade our roster."

The Cowboys are 4-2. However, they have roster holes. They need more linebacker depth since former Pro Bowler Leighton Vander Esch (neck) is on injured reserve. A dependable pass-catcher will bolster the Dallas passing offense, 20th in the NFL in yards per game (210.2).

In an ESPN article published Tuesday, NFL Nation reporters listed trade targets for every team. It included Houston Texans LB Denzel Perryman and Arizona Cardinals TE Zach Ertz, who would address the Cowboys' needs.

Even though Jones believes the Cowboys are one of the best teams in the league, he implied he doesn't think they're on the same level as the Philadelphia Eagles (6-1) or San Francisco 49ers (5-2).

"We belong in the upper echelons," the 81-year-old owner said, via Epstein. "I'm not gonna say we belong on the field with San Fran, and we haven't played Philly. I'm anticipating Philadelphia being what they look like. So I don't want to go that far. But we're in the upper echelon."

It was clear the 49ers were much better when they crushed the Cowboys 42-10 in Week 5. They have yet to play the Eagles, but OddsChecker gives Philadelphia (+600) stronger Super Bowl odds than Dallas (+1000).

To catch up to their rivals, Dallas must add more firepower, so Jones should change his plan and become a buyer during the trade deadline.
