Cowboys place franchise tag on TE Dalton Schultz

The Dallas Cowboys are "likely" to say goodbye to top-shelf wideout Amari Cooper at some point in the near future. Tight end Blake Jarwin has injury concerns and is expected to miss the start of next season, whether that's with Dallas or not.

The team reportedly made a key move Tuesday morning to make sure another crucial member of their offense wouldn't be going anywhere this offseason.

Schultz is the third NFL tight end to get slapped with the franchise tag in the last 24 hours-plus, joining David Njoku of the Cleveland Browns and Mike Gesicki of the Miami Dolphins. Schultz was slated to become an unrestricted free agent on March 16, and it had been reported that the team was interested in keeping the career-long Cowboy with the squad.

The 25-year-old ended the 2021 season tied with Amari Cooper for the team lead in touchdown receptions (eight), was one catch behind CeeDee Lamb for the Dallas lead in receptions (78), and tied Cooper for second in targets (104) and third in receiving yards (808.) Schultz finished third on the Cowboys in receptions (63) and second in touchdowns (four) in 2020.
