Cowboys QB Dak Prescott reportedly out Sunday vs. Rams

After Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters Monday that quarterback Dak Prescott needs to "go through a full week of prep before he plays" as he works to recover from the serious thumb injury he suffered on Sept. 11, logic suggested Prescott wouldn't be cleared in time to start for the 3-1 Cowboys at the 2-2 Los Angeles Rams this coming Sunday.

That was before Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones noted that Prescott "cannot yet grip a football well enough to play" and before Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News took to Twitter to report that a "person familiar" with the situation says the 29-year-old has already been ruled out for the Week 5 contest.

Backup Cooper Rush will look to win his fourth consecutive start in Prescott's absence. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are adding Will Grier to their active roster to serve as their QB2 at SoFi Stadium.

Rush is enjoying life as a fan-favorite after he became the first quarterback to win each of his first four starts in Cowboys history. According to ESPN stats, Rush will enter Week 5 fourth among eligible quarterbacks with a 73.9 total QBR for the season. The 28-year-old has completed 62-of-102 pass attempts (60.8%) for 737 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Prescott's next opportunity to return will be at the unbeaten division-rival Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 16.
