Dak Prescott is in the initial stages of rehabbing his surgically repaired ankle after suffering a gruesome, season-ending injury in the Dallas Cowboys’ Week 5 game.

While the team has predictably struggled in his absence, the superstar quarterback provided an encouraging update Thursday on how things are progressing in his recovery.

“When I go in for rehab it’s about seeing my leg or seeing my body do something that it didn’t do the day before or creating a feeling that I didn’t have the day before so I know that I’m continuing to get better,” Prescott said in part. “And at the end of the day, I know my team needs me. I know that they need me now for support but they’ll need me again later, so it’s about helping them, whichever way that I can and however I can.”

Prescott suffered a compound right ankle fracture and dislocation when he was tackled awkwardly by New York Giants free safety Logan Ryan during a scramble. It was a horrific injury, and Prescott was left in tears while being carted off the field. He underwent what was deemed a successful surgical procedure shortly afterward.

Concerning more practical matters, another issue confronting both the quarterback and the Cowboys beyond his recovery is how Prescott was playing under the franchise tag this season after the parties failed to come to terms on a long-term contract.

Contractual matters will presumably continue to loom in the background as Prescott proceeds through a grueling rehab process. For now, however, it’s encouraging to learn things are going as well as possible.
