Dak Prescott raves about Cowboys' new 'Texas Coast' offense
With former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore out and head coach Mike McCarthy in as offensive play-caller, many have wondered what a new-look Dallas Cowboys offense will look like.
If you ask quarterback Dak Prescott, McCarthy is keeping many of the same formations and schemes Dallas ran last season under Moore. However, he’s adding a West Coast flare, which changes, in Prescott’s estimation, roughly 30 to 35 percent of the offensive scheme.
"This is the 'Texas Coast,'" Prescott told reporters on Wednesday. "We just renamed that, the quarterbacks. It's got definitely some West Coast principles but has a little bit of what we've done in the past and just marrying them together with a lot of detail and maybe in a sense, a system that's not out there."
In Moore’s four seasons running the Cowboys offense from 2019 to 2022, the results were a mixed bag. Dallas ranked first, 14th, first and 11th, respectively, in total offense and finished in the top 10 three times in scoring, but it never translated to postseason success.
While Dallas had the fourth-best scoring offense in the NFL last year (27.5 points per game), Prescott had one of the worst seasons of his career, throwing a career-high 15 interceptions with the second-lowest passer rating of his career (91.1). The 238.3 passing yards per game he averaged was also his worst output since 2017.
Prescott’s struggles underscored the exact crux of the Cowboys offense, which is why McCarthy took over play-calling duties, promoted Brian Schottenheimer to offensive coordinator and seven-year NFL veteran Scott Tolzien to quarterbacks coach, traded for six-time 1,000-yard receiver Brandin Cooks and drafted tight end Luke Schoonmaker in the second round.
“(I) definitely (feel) refreshed,” Prescott said. “Just the details of everything have went up. That just heightened my focus, heightened everybody else’s focus. You the intentions. You know the purpose of plays. It’s definitely refreshing and exciting.”
