Cowboys HC signals Dak Prescott is quickly adapting to offensive change

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is praising quarterback Dak Prescott for quickly grasping their new offense.

"I have no interest in being known as some guru coach or a smart coach. I want smart, Hall of Fame type quarterbacks," McCarthy said Wednesday, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. "The only way to get there is to make them own the offense. [Dak] has done a really good job of that. He's knocked it out of the park."

Prescott looked strong during the first day of mini-camp on Tuesday. Per Todd Archer of ESPN, Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb connected for a TD during red zone work.

Prescott finding an offensive groove is what the Cowboys need after he threw 15 interceptions in 12 games last season, which was a career-high and tied for the league lead. Consequently, Dallas felt it needed a change, so it let go of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, and McCarthy assumed play calling.

It's a considerable risk because Prescott threw 30 or more TD twice while Moore served as OC from 2019 to 2022. Also, the Cowboys offense finished top-six in scoring three times.

Nonetheless, Prescott indicated the transition is going smoothly, and McCarthy has made him comfortable in the new system. Archer reported that McCarthy told Prescott they could remove plays he felt "iffy" about installing ones he liked instead.

It appears Prescott and McCarthy are developing synergy, which bodes well for the Cowboys since they need maximum performance from Prescott and the offense. The QB playing at an elite level strengthens their Super Bowl chances.
