Dan Patrick thinks Sean McVay could leave Rams for TV job

Whispers that head coach Sean McVay could leave the Los Angeles Rams for a television job are curiously growing louder ahead of Christmas Day.

"With the amount of money that’s there, and he’s an energetic guy, I don’t know if you put him in studio – you put him out there with doing a game – probably in studio, he might look at this and go 'Maybe I’ll go through one more year here,'" Dan Patrick said during his Thursday show about McVay, as shared by Jordan Bondurant of Barrett Sports Media. "But Tony Romo’s making more money than Sean McVay is right now. But Sean McVay’s making a good living. The question is, are you going to be successful?"

McVay confirmed in August he had signed an extension with the Rams following the club's Super Bowl LVI win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Earlier this week, Kurt Badenhausen of Sportico noted that McVay earns roughly $14 million per season from that agreement. To compare, Romo is reportedly making $17 million annually from CBS.

It was learned this past spring that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady agreed to a 10-year, $375 million contract to become lead NFL analyst for Fox Sports whenever he retires from playing.

Perhaps coincidentally, media personality Colin Cowherd explained on Thursday that he also believes McVay could ditch the Rams for a broadcasting gig sooner than later. McVay already has a Super Bowl title on his résumé, and the 4-9 Rams could be on the cusp of a rebuild regardless of what future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald and quarterback Matthew Stafford decide about their futures this offseason.

The sports talk format is admittedly nothing if not repetitive, but Patrick and Cowherd both mentioning similar theories on the same day is at least slightly interesting. It's no secret Amazon wanted McVay for "Thursday Night Football" broadcasts following the 2021 season, but it is unknown if that company would reach out to the 36-year-old as soon as next month.
