Davante Adams wants to be highest-paid wide receiver in NFL
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams has made it very clear he thinks he should be the highest-paid receiver in the NFL.
Whether the team is on the same page is, well, a bit less clear.
Adams, who is in the final year of his current contract, told reporters on Wednesday upon his arrival at training camp he has "earned the right" to a contract akin to that of highest-paid wideouts DeAndre Hopkins and Julio Jones. According to Spotrac, Adams' current contract ranks 18th among receivers across the league.
"I'm not gonna get too far into details about the numbers and all of that stuff, but I like to say that I've outperformed my last contract or my current contract," Adams said, via CBS Sports. "I'm going to keep elevating. At the end of the day, however it pans out, it pans out that way and I'm going to think long and hard about how everything goes. At this point, like I said, I'm here for my teammates and I'm really excited to be back. I told you guys before -- I'm a man of my word and I'm ready to play."
Yes, Adams topped the league on the gridiron last season and has every right to demand a salary increase. But Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst didn't give any indication to reporters on Wednesday he's all in on giving the 28-year-old what he wants.
This isn't to say Green Bay doesn't believe Adams is worth the money. But the Packers are also currently dealing with getting themselves under the salary cap while still ironing out Aaron Rodgers' new deal and bringing back wide receiver Randall Cobb at Rodgers' request.
Adams chose not to hold out for a new deal and reported to camp this week. But given his comments, he could look to get that contract elsewhere if the Packers won't give it to him.
