Did Steelers hire OC Matt Canada's replacement?

The Steelers announced Wednesday that they've hired Glenn Thomas as their offensive assistant coach. Could he be offensive coordinator Matt Canada's potential replacement?

That is probably the worst-case scenario Pittsburgh is preparing for, but Thomas should at least provide some help to Canada with over 20 years of coaching experience at the NFL and collegiate levels.

Thomas, who is 45, spent last year as Arizona State's offensive coordinator. He was previously the offensive coordinator for UNLV (2020-21), Baylor (2017-19) and Temple (2016).

His last stint in the NFL was with the Falcons from 2008-14 as an offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach. However, Thomas did have success as the quarterbacks coach for Matt Ryan, helping him lead the league in completion percentage in 2012.

Steelers QB Kenny Pickett ranked 24th in the league in completion percentage (63.0 percent) in 2022. Hopefully Thomas can find similar success with Pittsburgh's young quarterback.

It's difficult to tell now, but it looks to be a solid hire. The Steelers now have a backup plan if the team wants to move on from Canada during season and Thomas will bring another set of eyes to a young and talented offense that's ready to take another step in 2023.
