Dolphins bringing back Josh Boyer as defensive coordinator

Mike McDaniel has made his first significant decision as the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

The news comes two days after it was reported that the Jacksonville Jaguars were set to interview Miami defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander.

Boyer began his coaching career at Division III King's College in 2000 as a graduate assistant and then held the same role at Dayton in 2001, and Kent State in 2002 and 2003. Boyer then served as the defensive backs coach at Division II Bryant University in 2004, before coaching in his final college role with the South Dakota Mines of the NAIA in 2005.

The 45-year-old landed his first NFL gig with the New England Patriots in 2006 as a defensive assistant and stayed in that position through the 2008 campaign. Boyer then served as the Patriots defensive backs coach in 2009, 2010 and 2011, before becoming their cornerbacks coach in 2012 and staying their until 2018.

In 2019, Boyer was the Dolphins defensive pass game coordinator/cornerbacks coach, before he was promoted to his current position in 2020.
