Dolphins signing Jason McCourty to replace Bobby McCain?

The Miami Dolphins surprised many by parting ways with safety and defensive captain Bobby McCain to reportedly free up over $5.5 million in salary-cap space. 

While Miami hosted free-agent safety Malik Hooker earlier in the week, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo (h/t Grant Gordon) reported on Thursday that veteran Jason McCourty is signing a one-year deal with the Dolphins. 

McCourty reunites with Miami head coach Brian Flores, who served as New England Patriots defensive play-caller in 2018. Jason spent the past three seasons playing alongside twin brother and safety Devin McCourty with New England.

Before 2018, Jason McCourty played for the Tennessee Titans from 2009 to 2016 and then spent the 2017 campaign with the Cleveland Browns. The NFL's website notes that the Browns and, later, the Patriots considered utilizing the natural cornerback as a safety. 

Across 166 career regular-season games, McCourty has tallied 723 total tackles, 18 interceptions, 106 pass breakups, nine forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and one defensive touchdown.
