Drew Lock in 'driver's seat' to be Broncos starting quarterback in 2021

Drew Lock will open the preseason as the Denver Broncos starting quarterback, and it seems he's in a good position to win the starting job over Teddy Bridgewater.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Lock will start Saturday's preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings and is "in the driver's seat" in Denver's quarterback competition this summer.

After passing on Justin Fields in the 2021 NFL Draft, many expected Denver to start Bridgewater over Lock as he has more experience and has been more consistent over his career.

However, the Broncos want to see if Lock can be their quarterback of the future. If he fails in 2021, the franchise might consider moving on from him and drafting another signal-caller.

Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said earlier this summer that Bridgewater and Lock would have an equal opportunity to win the starting job in 2021.

Lock went 4-1 in his first five starts in Denver, completing 64.1% of his passes for 1,020 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He looked very promising.

Then 2020 came, and the young quarterback struggled mightily in his sophomore season, going 4-9, completing 57.3% of his passes for 2,933 yards with 16 touchdowns against 15 interceptions in 13 games.

Bridgewater wasn't much better in 2020, though, going 4-11 while completing 69.1 percent of his passes for 3,733 yards, 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

It's a big year for the Broncos. Only time will tell if Lock is their guy.
