The Philadelphia Eagles had one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL during the 2023 season. Quarterback Jalen Hurts took a huge leap in his development, finishing second in the MVP voting last season. Despite offensive coordinator Shane Steichen moving on and accepting the head coaching position with the Indianapolis Colts, the Eagles are once again in a position to succeed offensively.
Philadelphia did lose running back Miles Sanders in free agency to the Carolina Panthers, but an argument could be made that the supporting cast around Hurts is better this season than last. In the backfield, Rashaad Penny was signed to replace Sanders and D’Andre Swift was acquired from the Detroit Lions in a trade during the 2023 NFL Draft. Boston Scott was retained in free agency and Kenneth Gainwell remains on the roster as well.
A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL and that depth improved with the addition of Olamide Zaccheus in free agency. Tight end Dallas Goedert rounds out an excellent group of pass catchers for Hurts to target.
Could the Eagles look to make an already strong offensive group even more talented? They have been suggested as a potential landing spot for wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. should the Panthers look to trade him this offseason.
Marshall is entering Year 3 of his NFL career and is someone that could be ready to emerge. As pointed out by David Chappine of Wolf Sports, his average yards per target jumped up to 10.4 last season from 4.6 as a rookie.
That is a sign of Carolina getting Marshall more involved in their offense as a big play producer. The LSU product also saw his yards per reception more than double in Year 2, going from 8.1 to 17.5.
Teams can never have enough deep threats and Marshall’s skill set could really be unlocked playing in Philadelphia. Alas, the Eagles already have a seldom-used deep threat on the roster in Quez Watkins.
He is entering his fourth season in the NFL and if the team cannot find a role for him behind Brown and Smith, it is hard to imagine someone such as Marshall coming in from another organization and being able to find success. If the Panthers do trade Marshall, there are better landing spots for his development and long-term outlook than the Eagles.
